Background of the Study
Small-scale enterprises (SSEs) play a crucial role in the economic development of Nigeria, providing employment and contributing to local economies. However, the success and growth of these enterprises are often influenced by geopolitical factors, such as government policies, regional political alignments, and ethnic considerations (Eze & Ibrahim, 2024). In Lafia Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State, these geopolitical factors shape the business environment, with some enterprises benefiting from favorable political connections while others struggle due to exclusionary practices or unfavorable policies. This study seeks to assess how geopolitical dynamics, including political alliances and local governance structures, impact the viability and sustainability of small-scale enterprises in Lafia LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Lafia LGA, small-scale enterprises face several challenges that may be exacerbated by local geopolitical factors, including limited access to funding, infrastructure, and market opportunities. The study aims to assess the extent to which these factors influence the success of small-scale enterprises and propose solutions to mitigate the negative impact of political and regional dynamics.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the impact of local political and geopolitical factors on the operation of small-scale enterprises in Lafia LGA.

  • To evaluate the challenges faced by small-scale enterprises in Lafia and the role of governance in addressing these issues.

  • To recommend policy interventions for improving the business environment for small-scale enterprises in Lafia LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How do local political and geopolitical factors affect the growth and sustainability of small-scale enterprises in Lafia LGA?

  • What are the main challenges faced by small-scale enterprises in Lafia, and how do these relate to regional political dynamics?

  • What strategies can be implemented to enhance the viability of small-scale enterprises in Lafia?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical factors significantly influence the success and growth of small-scale enterprises in Lafia LGA.

  • Small-scale enterprises in Lafia face unique challenges due to political and regional factors, limiting their economic potential.

  • Addressing these geopolitical challenges will lead to improved outcomes for small-scale enterprises in Lafia.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for local policymakers, business owners, and development experts working in Nasarawa State and Nigeria at large. By understanding the influence of geopolitical factors on small-scale enterprises, more targeted strategies can be implemented to foster a more supportive business environment (Eze & Ibrahim, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on small-scale enterprises in Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State. Limitations include difficulties in obtaining data from businesses that may be reluctant to share information due to political sensitivities.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Geopolitical Factors: Political, regional, and ethnic considerations that influence governance and economic policies.

  • Small-Scale Enterprises (SSEs): Businesses that are independently owned and operated, typically with fewer than 50 employees.

  • Lafia Local Government Area: A region in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, where small-scale enterprises are influenced by local political dynamics (Eze & Ibrahim, 2024).
